Mamta Kulkarni, the former Bollywood star, was anointed as the Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Friday. In an interview, the 52-year-old expressed her gratitude for this spiritual milestone and reflected on her transformative journey over the last 23 years.
Describing her new title as a monumental achievement, Mamta told India Today, “People of Kinnar Akhada represent the Ardhnareshwar avatar of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. Becoming a Mahamandaleshwar of such Akhada is like an Olympic medal after 23 years of my spiritual practice.”
Mamta revealed that returning to films is not something she could imagine anymore. “I can’t even imagine doing films again. It is absolutely impossible for me now,” she stated in Hindi. Reflecting on her decision to join the Kinnar Akhada, she said, “It’s only with the blessings of the Goddess Adishakti that I have been bestowed with this honour. I chose to be a part of the Kinnar Akhada because it represents freedom. There are no restrictions here.”
The former actress, who is known for her roles in blockbusters like Karan Arjun and Sabse Bada Khiladi, recalled her time in the entertainment industry, where she worked alongside stalwarts like Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Speaking about the contrast between her past and present, Mamta said, “You need everything in life, including entertainment. You should acknowledge your needs. But, spirituality is something that you can only achieve through luck. Siddhartha (Prince Siddhārtha Gautama who became Lord Buddha) saw everything in his life and then decided to change.”
Mamta also shared insights into her spiritual journey, explaining how she underwent rigorous tests by four teachers who questioned her dedication to life and spirituality. Her answers eventually convinced them of her commitment, leading to their request for her to assume the title of Mahamandaleshwar.
The consecration ceremony, a significant event at the Maha Kumbh Mela, was marked by celebrations as Mamta embraced her new role. Sharing a glimpse of the ceremony through a video clip, Mamta affirmed her decision to leave behind worldly pleasures for a life dedicated to spiritual growth.
