Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan have been married for more than 50 years now. The couple had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2023. Big B and Jaya continue to be a huge inspiration for many. But clearly, they’ve also had to constantly deal with the constant scrutiny around their personal life while rumours of link-ups. For years now, there have been rumours and speculations around Big B’s relationship with Rekha. Though Bachchan has always maintained that she was just a co-star.
Here’s recalling the time when Jaya Bachchan had also reacted to the constant scrutiny around her marriage amidst the rumoured link-ups. She had said during an interview with People Magazine in 2008, “If there was any, he would have been somewhere else, na? People liked them as a couple on screen, and that’s fine. The media tried linking him with every one of his heroines. My life would have been hell if I had taken it all seriously. We are made of sterner stuff.”
Big B and Rekha had shared screen space last in Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila‘ which released in 1981. It also starred Jaya Bachchan. Reacting to why Bachchan and Rekha haven’t shared screen space post that, and if she has a problem with that, Jaya Bachchan had said, “Why should I mind? But I feel it will be more like a sensation than actual work. And that’s a pity because one will miss the opportunity of seeing them together. Both of them probably realise it will go beyond work.”
The ‘Guddi’ actress had also revealed in this interview as to how she has managed to keep her man with her, amidst all the rumours. “By just leaving him alone. You have to have the conviction. I married a good man and a family that believes in commitment. You must not get too possessive, especially in our profession, where you know things aren’t going to be easy. You can either drive the artiste crazy or you can help him or her grow. And if he goes, then he was never yours,” she said.
