The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium played host to an entertaining Indian Super League fixture on Saturday. After a topsy-turvy affair that had everything from flashes of brilliance to individual errors, Bengaluru FC (BFC) downed Chennaiyin FC (CFC) 4-2.
Ryan Williams’ scintillating show proved the difference in the end.
The first half saw BFC gaining the advantage and squandering it in no time twice.
While the visitor drew first blood through Williams in the 16th minute, CFC landed the counterpunch through Irfan Yadwad in the 19th.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz swivelled and outfoxed P.C. Laldinpuia from inside the box and sent a threatening cross to Williams. The Australian’s left-footed effort had enough venom to beat Mohammad Nawaz’s extended hand.
Chennaiyin’s Lukas Brambilla snatched the ball off Alberto Noguera’s feet and made a run to the box. Irfan found it easy to tap in and restore parity once Brambilla found him in front of goal.
Two contrasting headers were at the forefront of the match next.
While BFC regained its lead through the evergreen Sunil Chhetri’s powerful header off Williams’ cross in the 43rd, Chennaiyin was handed a gift by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu as he spilt an easy save off L. Hnamte in added time.
The Diaz-Williams combo clicked once again as a well-constructed goal in the 68th minute saw Bengaluru go in front for the third time in the contest.
It was CFC’s turn to present a goal next. Williams’ harmless cross was dealt by an indecisive L. Renthlei and the result was an own goal to seal Bengaluru’s victory.
The result: Chennaiyin FC 2 (Irfan 19, Hnamte 45+2) lost to Bengaluru FC 4 (Williams 16, 68, Chhetri 43, Renthlei 82-og).
