‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein‘ has evolved from a box-office disappointment to a beloved cult classic. However, contemporary audiences are now questioning its themes, particularly regarding romance and consent. The lead character, played by R. Madhavan, engages in deception and stalking yet is ultimately rewarded for his persistence, raising concerns about the portrayal of healthy relationships in the film.
The actor has addressed the criticism surrounding ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, arguing that the film is being unfairly judged through modern or Western perspectives. In a conversation with Mashable India, he dismissed concerns about the film’s themes, labeling them as an over-analysis of cultural norms that differed at the time.
Madhavan has responded to the backlash against the film, expressing his disagreement with the criticism. The actor stated that he completely disagreed with all this. These concepts like green flags and blue flags are just meaningless things said by idle people. He believes it’s important to be a gentleman. He emphasized that since childhood, he was taught how to approach women respectfully, which is a part of Indian culture. He argued that judging the film by Western standards is unfair, noting that societal norms were different at the time.
He defended his character’s actions in ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, arguing that during that era, especially in a city like Mumbai, men had limited ways to meet women. He questioned how a man who genuinely loved and respected a woman was supposed to approach her otherwise. Madhavan pointed out that while Western cultures may find meeting someone at a bar acceptable, traditional courtship in India was different. He emphasized that his character had few options, stating, “Without tracking her, without following her home, you couldn’t contact her. How could anyone do it?”
