All eyes are on Mahalaxmi race course as the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) gears up to host the most anticipated event in Indian horse racing — the HPSL Indian Derby (Gr. 1) on February 2 (Sunday).

The thrilling weekend carnival boasts a staggering prize pool of over ₹4.7 crore featuring 17 high-stakes races with eight races on Saturday (Feb.1) and nine on Sunday with the final two under the floodlights.

This year’s Derby field, featuring a competitive line-up of 16 runners, has been strengthened by five late entries — African Gold, Duke of Tuscany, Psychic Star, Ranquelino and Regina Memorabilis — with each securing their spot with a ₹15 lakh entry fee. Their inclusion has elevated the total prize purse to ₹2,82,50,000, making the competition even fiercer.

Santissimo, trained by Pesi Shroff, clinched the Bangalore Summer Derby (2000m) in commanding fashion but later fell short against Redefined in the Pune Derby.

However, he bounced back strongly in the Indian 2000 Guineas with a dominant victory. Based on his current form, morning trials, and a promising mock race, Santissimo is expected to be a strong challenger for top honours.

Another contender with a point to prove is Golden Thunder, trained by Karthik Ganapathy. Having effortlessly dominated his rivals in the Ruia Cup (2000m), he now faces the ultimate test of his staying ability over the extended Derby distance.

Darius Byramji-trained Ranquelino stamped his authority with a resounding victory in the Bangalore Derby on January 26. However, with just six days to recover, his ability to replicate that performance will be tested.

Duke of Tuscany, a recent addition to Pesi Shroff’s stable who delivered a decisive victory in the Golconda Derby Stakes, could emerge as a serious threat. Casteel, from Satish Narredu’s stable, arrives in fine form after an impressive win in the Calcutta Derby Stakes. His staying prowess makes him a formidable contender in this elite line-up.

Among the six fillies in the fray, Psychic Star, another Shroff trainee, stands out as a top contender. She showcased her class with a commanding victory in the Indian Oaks and maintains her stellar form.
