MUMBAI: Patanjali has recalled four tonnes of 200 gram red chilli powder packs following a directive from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which found the product packs to be in non-conformance with FSSAI regulations. The product samples when tested were found not conforming to the maximum permitted limit of pesticides residue, the company said on Friday.
The company will issue refund to consumers who have purchased the contaminated powder packs. The FSSAI sets maximum residue limits for pesticide residue for various food items including red chilli powder. “In line with specified regulatory norms, the company has taken immediate steps to inform its distribution channel partners and released advertisements to reach out to the consumers who have purchased the product and urged to return them to the place of purchase and claim full refund,” Sanjeev Asthana, CEO at Patanjali Foods, said. The value and volume of the recall product is very small, the firm claimed.
Patanjali Foods sells a range of edible oils and packaged foods including biscuits, noodles and sugar. The company’s parent Patanjali Ayurved, led by yoga guru Baba Ramdev, gained a foothold in India’s consumer goods market by positioning itself as a brand, which it claimed uses natural ingredients.
