Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan got married in Mumbai on June 3, 1973. They have been together for over 50 years, making them one of Bollywood’s most famous couples.
In what was their first interview after marriage on a radio, Amitabh and Jaya opened up about a few details about their sudden, secret wedding. The interview happened in London, where the couple traveled shortly after getting married. Their trip to London actually played a key role in Amitabh and Jaya’s decision to tie the knot.
Before Zanjeer was released, Amitabh and Jaya’s friends said they would go to London if the movie was a success. However, Amitabh’s parents disagreed, saying he couldn’t go with a girl unless he married her. Instead of being upset, Amitabh saw this as the perfect moment to propose and take the next step in their relationship.
In a radio interview, Jaya shared that they decided to get married only seven days before their London trip, with the wedding taking place just one day before their flight. Amitabh mentioned that they both felt ready to marry at the same time, initially planning for October 1973, but ended up tying the knot a few months earlier, even though their parents were aware of their plans.
Jaya’s uncle, Himanshu, was also present during her and Amitabh Bachchan’s radio interview. Although Himanshu lived in London, he didn’t know about their secret wedding until they arrived in the city. Jaya explained that she had actually told him about it over the phone.
Himanshu mentioned that while Jaya had called him to say she had something shocking to share, she never actually revealed the big news. Amitabh defended Jaya, pointing out that even their house staff didn’t know about their wedding. Himanshu then expressed his joy for their marriage and appreciated that they visited him so soon after tying the knot.
During the interview, Jaya’s uncle, Himanshu, asked the couple if they ever felt like they were wasting time in London without work. Amitabh explained that they didn’t, as there was plenty to do and see in the city. However, he added that if they had come to London without getting married, they might have felt some emptiness.
The couple also shared how they enjoyed the freedom to explore London and visit shops, something they couldn’t do in Bombay. Amitabh amusingly recalled an incident at Madame Tussauds, where a girl recognized him. While the girl was excited and pointed him out, her mother humorously disagreed, insisting it couldn’t be Amitabh Bachchan, even though he looked just like him.
