Harshdeep Kaur, who once dreamt of meeting AR Rahman, had the opportunity not only to meet the legendary composer but also to sing for him in Rang De Basanti. She shared that their first meeting occurred during auditions for the 2005 film Kisna.
Harshdeep further shared during a music podcast that during auditions for Kisna, she was one of five singers competing for a part. To her surprise, AR Rahman called her first. He asked her to sing the chorus for the film’s background music. Harshdeep took the opportunity, singing three songs for him, and found Rahman to be very patient during the process.

After her audition, Harshdeep left the result to fate. A few months later, she received a call from AR Rahman to sing for Rang De Basanti. Rahman wanted her to perform a prayer sung at the Golden Temple. Harshdeep prepared thoroughly by learning ‘Ik Onkar‘ and bringing a book to ensure Rahman understood the prayer’s significance.

The singer further shared a memorable moment with AR Rahman when he asked her to sing a prayer at 4 a.m., the time it’s traditionally sung. They had been waiting since 8 p.m., and Rahman ensured the moment felt spiritual. Harshdeep recalled feeling as though God was with her during this profound experience.
Harshdeep Kaur considers ‘Ik Onkar’ a pivotal prayer in her life, as it led to a special performance at Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding. Ranveer, a fan of the prayer, personally invited her, sharing that he listens to her rendition every morning and wanted her to sing it on his special day.
