All We Imagine As Light‘ may have missed out on winning at the Golden Globes, but filmmaker Payal Kapadia is taking it in her strides. The film that gained international recognition was nominated in two major categories—Best Director and Best Foreign Film – but sadly lost out in both categories.
Following the awards show, Kapadia shared her thoughts on the results. Taking to her handle to post a photo alongside her collaborators Thomas Hakim, Julien Graff, and Ranabir Das, the director wrote, “We didn’t win anything but had soo much fun.”
She also sent a shout out to her designer and stylist for her chic red carpet look.
On the Golden Globes red carpet, Kapadia reflected on her dual nominations, expressing pride and gratitude for the recognition. “It’s absolutely incredible,” she said. “This is a very small movie, made through the struggles of many people pooling resources. The fact that it’s here with all these amazing films is something I feel truly honoured by.”

In a roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kapadia shared insights into her journey as a filmmaker. Inspired by experimental directors like Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, and India’s S.N.S. Sastry, she detailed how her years in film school shaped her approach. She recounted how her time spent in hospital waiting rooms, led her to notice moments that sparked the creative process for her award-winning project.

Recounting the time her family members were in the hospital, she said, “While in the waiting room hanging around — because I was a student [and didn’t yet have a job] — I was thinking, ‘This is a great mise-en-scène to make a film.’ I was observing things; I started making friends with some nurses; and I got used to the rhythm of the hospital, the shifts, who’s going to come, when she’s texting her boyfriend. And I noticed, in a very banal, depressing place, little moments of happiness. Then I did a lot of interviews and realized that 20 minutes wouldn’t be enough. It’s been five years since then.”

‘All We Imagine As Light’ was not selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars, but is tipped to score a nomination in the Best Director category.
