Aamir Khan was just a few films old when he starred in director Indra Kumar’s Dil, which marked a pivotal moment in both their careers. The 1990 blockbuster brought Aamir his first major success since his debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Recently, Indra reflected on Aamir’s low phase in the industry and how his career turned around in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan.
Indra revealed, “Aamir had eight flops in a row after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. What could he do? He was working sincerely. A film’s success is in the hands of a director, not the actor. If Dil hadn’t worked, both Aamir and I wouldn’t have had careers.” He praised Aamir’s talent, stating, “He just needed a good opportunity. He was blessed with Dil, and the way his career took off from there, he never looked back.”
The duo collaborated again on Ishq and Mann. Reflecting on Mann, Indra shared that both he and Aamir had doubts during production. “One day, Aamir told me, ‘Indu yaar yeh picture mujhe kahin aur jaate hue dikh rahi hai (Indu, I feel this film is heading in another direction),’” Indra recalled. Despite their reservations, they proceeded, but the film underperformed at the box office.
Addressing rumors that Aamir was distracted on the set of Mann due to his divorce from Reena Dutta, Indra refuted the claims. “That’s a lie. Aamir was nothing but a sincere professional on set. One of his finest performances is in Mann. If anyone failed in that movie, it’s me, not Aamir,” he admitted.
Mann marked the last collaboration between Aamir Khan and Indra Kumar.
