The beloved star of the South industry Mohanlal made his directorial debut with ‘Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure.’ The children’s fantasy film was released theatrically during the 2024 festive cheer of Christmas.
With a perfect mix of several flavors for adventure, fantasy, and visual effects, the Malayalam film is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel ‘Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure’. The movie has been keeping the cash registers ringing at the box office, and at the same time, the audience can’t wait to catch the same on OTT. According to various media reports, Disney+ Hotstar has acquired the OTT rights for ‘Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure.’ Though the release date for Mohanlal’s debut directorial has not been announced yet, it is expected to hit the OTT streaming giant post its full theatrical run.
‘Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure’
Work on ‘Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure’ began in 2019. It is the story of Barroz, a guardian protecting da Gama’s hidden treasure for 400 years. He has been entrusted with the huge responsibility of giving the wealth to the true descendant of da Gama, who is the real owner of the treasure.
In addition to directing, Mohanlal has played the titular role in the fantasy film. Alongside him are several stars in key characters like Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon. It was shot at various locations – Goa, Kochi, Chennai and Bangkok. Award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan implied his skills to create the most stunning visuals.
Reviewing the movie, ETimes wrote – “When an actor of Mohanlal’s experience and mettle announces his directorial debut, expectations are always sky high. Barroz is not a disappointing film if you keep aside the expectation of a legendary actor being an equally able director.”
