Sujata Mehta is a veteran actress known for movies like ‘Pratighaat’, ‘Yateem’, ‘Gunaah’ and also many Gujarati movies. She was also a very popular face in some of the most remembered TV shows from the 90s – be it ‘Srikant’, ‘Yeh Meri Life Hai’ or ‘Yes Sir’. In a recent interview, Sujata has opened up on her experience of working with some of the superstars who she has worked with. She shared how it was to work with Sridevi and clarified about this perception about her that she was arrogant. She also reflected on Sridevi’s alleged rivalry with Madhuri Dixit.
Sujata said in a chat with Hindi Rush that Sridevi was very humble. She once asked a niece to vacate a chair so that Sujata could sit. The actress said that the ‘Chandni’ actress was always very respectful towards her. She further clarified that Sridevi wasn’t arrogant but she was just an introvert and very upset due to her break-up with Mithun Chakraborty.
Sujata said, “She used to be so distraught, but she was so professional. The moment the camera turned on, she belonged only to the camera. But after the shot, she would sit quietly in a corner. They were madly in love.”
For those not in the knot, Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty were not just rumoured to be dating, but there were speculations that they were secretly married.
She further spoke about Sridevi’s alleged rivalry with Madhuri and said, “They would sit at a distance on the set. Madhuri wouldn’t talk to anyone. She would sit in her corner with her Walkman.”
The actress also has worked with Rajinikanth in the 1987 movie Zameen. She described him as a humble star and said, “He doesn’t have the conventional hero look, but he’s a superstar. When I asked him how he pulls it off, he told me, ‘I sit in front of the mirror the whole night and talk to myself.’ He would skip lunch and only have buttermilk. He has no ego and is incredibly down-to-earth.”
In the same interview, she also opened up on Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor and appreciated the later. “Ranbir is mind-blowing. For an actor to make it big despite having superstar parents is a big achievement—it doesn’t happen often,” she said.
