Jason Momoa, best known for his role as the DC superhero Aquaman, is set to switch sides and portray the infamous supervillain Lobo in the upcoming ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘. The news, confirmed by Deadline, marks a major shift for Momoa within the DC Universe.
Momoa has been associated with the character of Lobo long before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC. The actor, an avid comic book fan, has often expressed his enthusiasm for the role. Confirming the rumours about his casting, the actor shared in an Instagram post, a past interview where he talked about his desire to play the villainous character.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but [Lobo] was always my favorite. I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” Momoa said. In the same post, he revealed his excitement about landing the part, captioning it, “They called.”
Prior to his casting as ‘Aquaman’ in Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’, Momoa revealed in an interview that he thought he had bagged the role of Lobo and was surprised when the director told him that he was going to play the superhero instead.
Lobo, an antihero with a penchant for chaos, hails from the planet Czarnia. Known for his superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and near invulnerability, he is a formidable opponent with a violent and irreverent personality that has made him a fan favourite in DC comics.
Details about the Milly Alcock-led ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ remain under wraps, but the film is already rounding up its cast with Matthias Schoenaerts cast as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley also onboard as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
The project will be directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya) will go into production on January 13.
