Amrita Rao debuted in Bollywood with Ab Ke Baras (2002), which received mixed box office results, but her performance was praised. She gained major success in Ishq Vishk (2003) with Shahid Kapoor. She also starred in the Telugu film Athidi with Mahesh Babu, but didn’t pursue further Telugu roles, citing that women are often reduced to “glam dolls” in the industry.
The actress went on to deliver hit films like Vivah with Shahid Kapoor and Main Hoon Na with Shah Rukh Khan. Her strong performances caught the attention of filmmakers, leading to roles opposite stars like Sunny Deol in Singh Saheb The Great and Ajay Devgn in The Legend of Bhagat Singh.
Apart from her films and performances, Amrita grabbed headlines now and then for various reasons. One such time was for her spat with co-star Esha Deol. In 2005, a conflict between Esha Deol and Amrita Rao escalated, with Esha slapping Amrita. Esha later stated that she did not regret her actions.
The incident occurred on the sets of Pyare Mohan, which also starred Fardeen Khan and Vivek Oberoi. Esha later explained that she was provoked after Amrita insulted her in front of the director and cameraman, which she felt was completely out of line and unacceptable.
Esha further explained that, in the heat of the moment, she slapped Amrita to defend her self-respect and dignity. She stated that she had no regrets, believing Amrita’s behavior at that time warranted it. Esha emphasized that she was simply standing up for herself and her dignity.
Esha mentioned that Amrita later acknowledged her mistake and apologized. Esha forgave her, and things are now fine between them. When asked about her outburst, Esha explained that she comes from a very cultured background and such actions are not typical for her unless provoked.
Meanwhile, Amrita married her boyfriend, RJ Anmol, in a secret ceremony in 2014. In November 2020, they welcomed a son named Veer. The couple runs a YouTube channel called Couple of Things and released a book by the same name in February 2023.
She is currently living a more private life, away from the spotlight. Her last film appearance was in Thackeray (2019), where she played a significant role, marking her return to the screen after a five-year hiatus. The film was based on the life of Balasaheb Thackeray.
